What I wish someone had said to me before I bought: All of the Scotty powered downriggers are junk. I can see how you might give them a good review based on function but they are so finicky, delicate and cheaply built that any user error results in a snapped cable and lost weight. Yes, it's user error, but if you can't rely on someone with basic instruction to use it successfully it turns into another job for the skipper. At a third of price they would be a decent buy but in practice they are still too unreliable for most people to integrate into their gear set. Probably why they aren't widely used. Unfortunately I am not aware of a high enough quality powered downrigger to be of use in a marine environment. A cheaper and better solution would be a pot hauler setup like a capstain with a bit of stainless pipe for a boom and some poly cord with a really heavy weight to make up for the line drag. Part of the problem with the Scotty's is the steel line doesn't have the give and the choppy electric motor snaps it easily. This would be solved by using rope with a bit of stretch and a friction instead of a drum winch. Also, easy for crew to understand and use. 4mm poly is 200kg breaking strain. Good for longlines. Probably too thick for this though. Maybe 3mm would work.
